The town of Holly Springs issued its first-ever proclamation for Pride Month on Tuesday, recognizing the LGBTQ+ community in the town. Holly Springs Mayor Mike Kondratick announced the proclamation alongside Pride of Holly Springs chair Donna Friend.
“For 56 years, and really it’s been longer than that, The LGBTQI+ community has had the courage to continue to fight for the unconditional acceptance that they so freely give everyone else,” the mayor said.
“They fight for all of those people to feel secure, respected and at home. Now for too long in Holly Springs, recognition of these basic rights has been denied. Now I am not in a position to question or judge other leaders motives, but I’m certain that recognizing courage and love is the right thing to do. And so tonight I am proud to be able to say that for the first time in Holly Spring’s history, in true recognition … that we will proclaim June as Pride Month.”
It’s the second move toward inclusivity for the LGBTQ+ community from this town council. Three months ago, they passed Wake County’s nondiscrimination ordinance after passing on adoption in 2022, INDY reported in February.
