As mentioned in The Line’s Q&A with Wake County Commissioner Safiyah Jackson, people may not want to talk trash, but it’s a big issue for the future of Wake County.

The South Wake Landfill is expected to be full by 2045, and Wake County is studying its options for future waste disposal as Wake County grows.

The South Wake Landfill Study is in the next phase of public engagement, weighing four options for future waste disposal:

  • Building a new, publicly owned landfill
  • Transferring trash to regional landfills
  • Developing a waste-to-energy (WtE) facility, burning trash to make electricity
  • Alternative waste disposal options

You can give feedback at upcoming input sessions or using virtual tools.

The active South Wake Landfill is located in Apex, but close to Holly Springs homes and development.

Reporter Chloe Courtney Bohl toured the landfill back in early 2026. What’s next for the landfill was part of that story. Read the full story here.
