Earth Day is Wednesday. Here are local events and resources to explore a more sustainable life in Western Wake:
♻️ Start at home: In Cary, you can purchase a compost bin or a rain barrel for rainwater collection at a discounted price through May 10. The town says the prices are below wholesale, and after purchase, you’ll receive information about pickup. See the options here.
- For more composting support, check out the Compost Education Center at Bond Park, open year round during park hours, and an upcoming center open house 9-11 a.m. on May 9. More resources, including drop-off sites, are listed here.
🐝 Earth Day event at Fenton: Happening on Earth Day Wednesday, this event has activities for all ages at Fenton Square in Cary. Starting at 4 p.m., activities include a sustainable craft station from Durham Scrap Exchange, and the Buddha Bee Apiary table will talk about the Fenton Bees. The North Carolina Children’s Museum’s STEM Mobile Museum will be on hand 4-6 p.m., and YogaSix will hold a $5.36 grounding yoga class at6 p.m. “The Bee Movie” will be shown outdoors at 7 p.m. While you’re there, you can drop off old electronics to be recycled and pick up free wildflower seed packets.
🌎 EarthFest Apex festival: This year’s festival, 12-4 p.m. Saturday at the Town Hall Campus in Apex, is focused on sustainable fashion. That includes a fashion show with clothing from Dorcas Ministries Thrift Store and a clothing swap with 416 Clothing Trade.
Bring gently used and clean clothes to give and find something new to you to take home. Free to participate in the clothing swap, and the remaining clothing will be donated.
Composting and recycling will be on hand for demonstrations. Readings of topical books are also on the schedule of events inside the Apex Senior Center. Don’t miss the puzzle swap!
🌎 Visit Earth Day Lane at Cary Spring Daze Arts & Crafts Festival: This section of the arts festival at Bond Park, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, will have recycling experts on hand and resources for tree care among other vendors.
♻️ Shop secondhand: Facebook Marketplace and local thrift stores are a great start. Another event-based option is Kids EveryWEAR. Most known for their kids’ clothing and gear consignment sale, the “EverythingELSE Sale” is coming up April 24-May 3 at South Hills Mall and Plaza in Cary. This particular sale includes everything (besides kids clothing) from consignment high-end clothing to furniture, appliances, and more.
- How it works: Pay for a ticket to get earlier access, or wait for the free ticket when what remains is deeply discounted, or in between.
